"Wont everything get Ruined out there?"
Building My Dream Backyard Gym in Florida
If you’re contemplating whether to build a backyard gym, let me share my journey to creating the ultimate outdoor workout space here in sunny Florida. With over $50,000 invested in high-quality gym equipment—most of it from Rogue—I’ve built a setup that’s a dream for any fitness enthusiast. But the real question is: should you take the plunge and build your own outdoor gym? Here’s a glimpse into my experience to help you decide.
Why Build a Backyard Gym?
First, let’s talk about the why. For me, fitness isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifestyle. As someone who values convenience, functionality, and the ability to work out on my terms, building a gym at home made perfect sense. Training outdoors in Florida’s warm climate is a bonus, especially when paired with the freedom to design a space tailored to my goals. No waiting for machines, no crowded spaces, just pure focus.
My Outdoor Gym Setup
The heart of my gym is mostly high-quality Rogue equipment—a brand known for its durability and performance. My setup includes:
Rogue Monster Lite Rack: The centerpiece of my gym, perfect for squats, bench presses, Wall Balls, Dips, and pull-ups.
Barbells and Plates: Heavy-duty equipment that stands up to the elements and my demanding training.
Dumbbells and Kettlebells: Essential for functional training and versatility.
GHD (Glute Ham Developer): A staple for building core strength and posterior chain power. I also have the Freak Athlete Nordic-Hyper-GHD
Conditioning Tools: I’ve got everything from a Concept2 Rower to Assault Fitness Bike, Rower, and Assault Runner, ensuring I can mix strength and cardio seamlessly.
This setup is exposed to the elements, but the quality of the equipment ensures longevity, even in Florida’s heat, humidity, and occasional rain showers.
The Challenges of an Outdoor Gym
Building an outdoor gym isn’t without its challenges. Here are some things to consider:
Weather: Florida’s sun and storms are no joke. Equipment must be durable and resistant to rust and corrosion. Investing in top-tier brands like Rogue made all the difference for me. Though some of the smaller screws are showing signs of rust, nothing has been an issue.
Maintenance: Regular upkeep is essential. I clean and protect my equipment frequently to ensure it stays in top shape.
Heat: Working out in the Florida heat can be intense. A shaded area or cooling strategies like fans or misting systems can make a big difference. I use a Cold Plunge from SunHome for the hottest days.
The Benefits of Outdoor Training
Despite the challenges, training outdoors has been incredibly rewarding. There’s something about the fresh air, natural light, and open space that elevates my workouts. Plus, it’s always motivating to walk outside and see my dream setup ready to go. Bonus that I get to workout BAREFOOT any time I want without people staring.
Should You Build an Outdoor Gym?
If you’re considering it, ask yourself:
Do you love the idea of training in your own space?
Are you committed to maintaining your equipment?
Do you have a climate that supports outdoor workouts?
For me, the investment has been worth every penny. It’s not just about the convenience; it’s about creating an environment that inspires me to train harder and stay consistent. The best part? My wife and kids get to experience it with me.
